De Kock runner to Fizz at Vaal

De Kock runner to Fizz at Vaal

DIEGO DE GOUVEIA

Jack Milner: Gin Fizz has not been the easiest of fillies to train but despite all her quirks, she is not short on talent.

Although she will have to take on the colts, De Kock could have found an ideal race at the Vaal on Tuesday for this daughter of Soft Falling Rain to notch up her third victory, where she will contest Race 6, a Graduation Plate over 1000m.

Gin Fizz has raced twice since coming back from the lockdown period. The first, a Pinnacle Stakes over 1000m at the Vaal, proved to be a disaster. She hit her head on the gate as she jumped and lost a tooth. From that point she was not pressured and finished at back of the field in a race won by Mr Flood.

Her next run was in the Grade 2 Camellia Stakes over 1160m at Turffontein. She showed tremendous pace and was clear going through the 400m mark but then faded out to finish fifth, 7.75 lengths behind Golden Belle.

She drops in class and distance on Tuesday and both will suit her. This will be her third run after a layoff so she should be in top form. In addition, she is the best handicapped runner by quite a margin so she is well weighted with 57kg on her back and should win, as long as she behaves.

Diego de Gouveia has picked up the ride.

De Kock also saddles Naafer who will be a contender if anywhere close to his best. De Kock does not send out unfit runners but as this Australian-bred son of Lonhro has not raced since April last year, he could still be in need of a run in order to loosen the cobwebs.

He clearly has his problems because he only had two runs last year. Prior to that he was also out of action for almost a year so it will be interesting to see how he performs.

Captain Hindsight is unquestionably the most consistent runner in the line-up but on paper he is badly under sufferance. He is 10.5kg out with Gin Fizz so using foresight, he will battle to win this.

However, he did win easily in a good time in his last start  Trumps so if you do leave him out and he does win, you will probably believe that in hindsight, you should have gone with the Captain.
