Distance suits Ready Steady Go

Jack Milner: Pinnacle Stakes races are often helpful to punters because more often than not, the winner comes out of the top-rated horses.

That might not be true at Durbanville today in Race 4, a Pinnacle Stakes over 1400m. While just seven runners are carded to go to post, the concern is that many of them are not ideally distance suited.

Best weighted is Kampala Campari from the Andre Nel yard. This six-year-old Querari gelding has raced three times over this distance and placed twice. The last time he tried 1400m was in October 2018 when he ran in the Grade 3 Matchem Stakes at this course and finished unplaced. It was, however, a strong field – the race was won by Rainbow Bridge – and Kampala Campari was only beaten 2.85 lengths.

Since then he has been campaigning over much further and his last two runs were over 2400m and 2800m respectively. He hasn’t raced since February so Kampala Campari might race freshly in his comeback run and be fit enough to contest the finish.

Second favourite is Rush Hour Girl but her problem is the opposite. She has not raced beyond 1250m and all four her wins are over 1200m.

She has taken on the colts before with some success so that is not a concern and the other factor in her favour is with apprentice Joshwin Solomons taking 4kg off her back, she is set to carry just 46kg.

That will allow her to receive 14kg from top weight Kampala Campari but she still has to prove she can stay.

So that leaves Sacred Arrow and Ready Steady Go as the two runners with the best form over 1400m and they could fight it out. Slight preference is for the Ready Steady Go who has had two runs since coming back from the lockdown and should be ideally primed for this race.

In his last race, Ready Steady Go finished 3.50 lengths in front of Scared Arrow who was having his first run after the layoff.

Greg Cheyne takes the ride.

Candice Bass-Robinson-trained Sacred Arrow has had four of his six wins over this distance and has proven form at the course so must be in with a chance.
