Two good bets at Scottsville

RICHARD FOURIE

Jack Milner: There look to be a couple of decent bets on the card at Hollywoodbets Scottsville today, but they both come up in Maiden Plates.

The best of them seems to be Keep The Lights On from the Justin Snaith yard. She runs in Race 5, a Maiden Plate over 1100m for fillies and mares. This daughter of Visionaire finished second on debut in Cape Town, beaten just 0.50 lengths by Lemon Delight in a Maiden Juvenile Plate for fillies. That was in January.

Snaith then moved her to KwaZulu-Natal and she made her debut in the province at Scottsville in another Maiden Juvenile Plate for fillies, this time over 1200m. She had Anton Marcus up and went off a hot favourite at 7-20. She was probably in need of the run and after hitting the front 400m from home, was caught late by Jasmine and beaten by one length.

Snaith opted to shift her up a gear and entered Keep The Lights On in the Listed Devon Air Stakes over 1400m at Greyville. Unfortunately, she drew widest of the 11 horses and a slow start did not help her chances. She was well beaten by Caralluma, finishing 7.15 lengths behind Sean Tarry’s charge, who won the race by four lengths.

That meant, despite everything that went wrong, Keep The Lights On was only 3.15 lengths behind Due Diligence, who went off as the 16-10 favourite.

Now Keep The Lights On reverts to a Maiden Plate and looks by far the best runner in the field. Richard Fourie takes the ride.

A similar situation comes up in Race 4 where Ashley Fortune sends out Validus in a Maiden Juvenile Plate over 1600m. This son of Dynasty is well-regarded by his connections, so much so that he made his debut in the Grade 1 Golden Horse Medallion over 1200m at Scottsville.

While she felt the distance was too sharp, Fortune believed Validus was good enough to place in that event but he blew his chances through inexperience and finished eighth of the 13 runners.

With that run under his belt and the extra distance, Validus looks ready to shed his maiden tag. Craig Zackey rode him in his last race and is back on board again.
