ALAN GREEFF

Jack Milner: Fairview hosts the final juvenile feature of the season today with the running of the Listed Champion Juvenile Cup over 1400m on the turf and bettors will be able to bid farewell to the 2019/20 season by reveling in a Pick 6 carryover at the meeting.

The pool will kick off with an injection of R100,000 and is expected to reach R600,000.

The Champion Juvenile Cup is quite an intriguing race. Trainer Gavin Smith runs Global Drummer, who many would argue is the best two-year-old seen in Port Elizabeth this season.

Local champion trainer Alan Greeff has four runners which include three fillies. Best of his Quartet could be Herrin and Santa Therese.

Justin Snaith also has a runner in Tarantino while in a rare move, KwaZulu-Natal trainer Mike Miller has brought Walls Of Dubrovnik from Durban.

The unofficial merit ratings for these five runners indicate this should be a very closely fought contest. After his 1.80-length third place behind Winter Stories in last Saturday’s KZN Yearling Sale Million (Non-Black Type), Walls Of Dubrovnik has been allotted a merit rating of 98 while local hope Global Drummer is just one point back on 97. Tarantino is rated 93, Herrin 91 and Santa Therese 83.

Purely because he has an excellent record of three wins from four starts and he is unbeaten at Fairview, a narrow preference is for Global Drummer. He has beaten both Tarantino and Herrin with ease and is 2kg better off with Snaith’s charge on this occasion.

However, this is his first race over 1400m and the first time he will be going around the turn, so that is a factor that needs to be taken into account.

Walls Of Dubrovnik did finish fourth in the Grade 3 Godolphin Barb Stakes over 1100m at Scottsville but was unplaced in the Listed Gatecrasher Stakes over 1400m at Greyville although he did suffer interference early in the race.

The unknown factor is Santa Therese, who went off at 12-10 on debut and romped home to win by 4.25 lengths. Two winners from nine runners have come from that form line and this daughter of Flower Alley will love the extra distance.
