BERGERAC

Jack Milner: Two lightly raced but talented four-year-olds go head to head in Race 5 at Turffontein on Sunday.

With a R250,000 carryover bloating the Pick 6 and a R50,000 injection starting off the pool for Jackpot One, bettors need look no further than including just Bergerac and Expressfromtheus in this MR 96 Handicap over 1600m on the Standside track.

The Pick 6 pool is likely to reach R2 million and the Jackpot One pool R600,000. The Pick 6 kicks off in Race 3 at 2pm with Jackpot One starting in Race 4 at 2.30pm.

Sean Tarry saddles Bergerac who has run four times for two wins and a second place. This son of Var finished fifth on debut over 1160m at this course and then a 0.40-length second behind Putins Promise in February.

He probably would have broken his maiden earlier but was in a forced layoff due to the Covid-19 lockdown. However, he came out again at the first Highveld meeting on 2 June and beat Dogliotti by a long head over 1450m on the Vaal Classic track.

Three winners have come from that form line, including both Bergerac and Dogliotti. Tarry’s charge made further improvement in his next start, when running out a very easy 3.50-length victor over Bassam. A winner has come from that form line while the runner-up ran a close-up second behind The It Factor in his next start.

Bergerac is well drawn at No 1 and has apprentice Luke Ferraris in the irons.

Expressfromtheus is trained by Stuart Pettigrew and has raced just six times for two wins and four places. He finished third in his first two starts last year after which the decision to geld him was taken. He returned to the track in February and easily beat Untamed Tiger by 4.50 lengths.

That was his last run before the lockdown and this son of What A Winter returned on 22 June over 1450m on the Turffontein Inside track to finish fourth and, probably still in need of a run, followed that up with a narrow loss to Seven Patriots over 1400m at the Vaal.

But 12 days layer, over 1600m at the Vaal, Expressfromtheus got his revenge with an emphatic 3.75-length win over Seven Patriots. Apprentice Cole Dicken rode him to victory and he is back aboard for this event, once again claiming his 2.5kg allowance.

This race could go either way, but because Bergerac is drawn No 1 against No 9 for Expressfromtheus, the Tarry-trained runner could have the edge.
