Australian superstar mare Verry Elleegant has taken out the 2020 Caulfield Cup (2400m) following a stirring duel with Anthony Van Dyck.
Sent out as a $5 favourite ahead of the Aidan O’Brien-trained Anthony Van Dyck at $6, Verry Elleegant settled just worse than midfield under Mark Zahra.
The runs came early in the feature, with the field packing up around the home turn as the early leader Dashing Willoughby dropped back sharply though the field.
The favourites came wide into the straight, with despised outsider The Chosen One bursting through closer to the fence.
A length off The Chosen One at the furlong (200m) marker, Verry Elleegant knuckled down strongly to run to the lead at the 75m, pulling out enough to hold a lunging Anthony Van Dyck at bay.
The hard-luck story of the race – at least from a place perspective – was Godolphin galloper Avilius, who was squeezed out for a run by the favourite at the 300m, before going back inside where he found more trouble.
Avilius eventually got clear and ran home well for 6th but the damage was well and truly done.
It was Verry Elleegant’s third Group One win for the campaign and her sixth overall.
The victory was jockey Mark Zahra’s fourth on the Caulfield card. – punters.com.au
