Headline News Classy Lan Air Cel has the edge

JACK MILNER
LAN AIR CEL is undoubtedly the best-performed runner in Race 7 at Scottsville this afternoon. When the Australian-bred filly was with Mike de Kock she won three of her first four starts, finished a 2.75-length fourth to Sun Classique in the Grade 1 Cape Fillies Guineas at Kenilworth from a poor draw, and contested both the Renounce Handicap and the Yellowwood Handicap, won by Soft Landing and Stratos respectively.
Headline News Jaroslaw has the class to extend his rivals

JACK MILNER
THE KwaZulu-Natal season may well be over but there are a couple of top-class races at Clairwood on Sunday. Topliner is an Open Handicap over 1200m and it looks set to be a hotly contested affair. While he is not the soundest horse in training, Jaroslaw is not short on ability and based on his form behind JJ The Jet Plane, could be the pick of this field.

Photo: Ernst Oertel trains Jaroslaw.

Headline News Fork Lightening can strike if Purple Rain precipitates

JACK MILNER
WHEN Fork Lightening ran at Greyville on Canon Gold Cup day, he was the talk of the racecourse. Trainer Sean Tarry was bullish about his chances and the seven-year-old Rambo Dancer gelding was supported from an opening call of 12-1 to 9-2. When Gavin Lerena moved up to leader Modern Monet it looked as if he would sweep past but the KZN Guineas third-placed runner kept finding and held on to beat a fast-finishing El Padrino and Fork Lightening in a three-way photo-finish.

Photo: Brett Smith rides Purple Rain.

Headline News Showroom to display his wares in 1200m Vaal race

JACK MILNER
SHOWROOM is one of those horses who has raised his game since switching to the sand. Paul Matchett’s runner looked rather ordinary in his first nine starts but a rest and a shift to the Vaal sand track seems to have made the difference for this four-year-old Lecture gelding. The stable clearly expected the improvement two runs back because he was supported in the betting, despite taking on a strong field of experienced sand runners in a Pinnacle Plate over 1200m. Showroom raced from off the pace but got up close home345 to beat Renegade going away by 0.75 lengths.
